Deny, Distract, and Frighten

It's amazing how skilled the White House is at manipulating the news. After last Friday's indictments, the President's comments to the public were terse and stressed the fact that all Americans deserved the process of justice, being innocent until proven guilty. On Monday, the first order of business was to nominate the next Supreme Court Justice. And not just any justice, one that was sure to get the liberals and the press talking, taking the attention away from the scandal at hand, and frightening Americans who worry that the space that divides Church and State might become just a blurred line easily erased over time.

This morning of course, not many were talking about indictments and scandal. As liberals geared up for a fight, the President turned to the scary topic of pandemic. While we may not be as frightened as we used to be about terrorism, we are certainly frightened at the way this Administration has gone about fighting terrorism. But never mind the inept waging of war, now we have a new fear, one that is invisible and more deadly than war, and can spread to the world in the time it takes to fly from London to New York. And while I applaud the Administration for taking steps to stockpile drugs and respirators, I question the timing of the address, much later than the European leaders have spoken about it, and designed to make the President look strong and leader-like in a time of crisis. But still, when you think about the last time the President looked strong and in charge, the output was the Iraq war, and how botched did that become?

The Democrats need to learn how to dominate the media. They need to learn how to bring the conversation back to the criminal negligence of the Republican party. We need people like Al Gore and Bill Clinton to come out swinging, do the talking heads circuit, demand answers, call for impeachment, whatever it takes. With all of the scandal in the Republican party, Delay, Frist, Abramoff...why wait? There will never be another opportunity like today, we have a clear shot to the head of the Republican beast.

I say let's take the swing. If we are defeated and we go down punching, at least we may bring to light some of the nastier tricks that the Republicans are capable of.

I read Marigold's post and wished there were something I could do to help. I don't have an elected representative, well I do, but since I live in DC, Eleanor Holmes Norton does not get a vote. But almost all of you liberals out there do have representation, and I strongly ask you to send the post card to your local Democrat and urge them to take action. This is not a time for caution, but a time to fight. Tell the Democrats to take off the gloves.

Defend the bad against the worse."
