Funny FreedomI don't know, maybe it's just me, but do you think that the birth of democracy in Iraq might begin with a free press? News people who might offer a different version of the truth? Even if you don't happen to like what the news people are saying, in a democracy, or some place you wanted to turn into a democracy by invasion, or a bloody occupation, you would want something along the lines of free speech. If for instance, the occupying powers who were so intent on freedom planned to bomb a news agency, that might be seen as counter-productive, something that freedom-loving people might frown upon. But Bush didn't really say he wanted to blow up Al Jezeera, he was probably just joking. And how funny is that? Rolling on the floor laughing my ass off funny, or just kind of ironic funny that the American gift bag of freedom includes one cruise missile aimed at an Arabic TV station? That President Bush, what a jokester! And the freedom-loving British government is threatening jail time for any news agency that publishes the secret minutes of the meeting with the not so funny joke. Do you think that freedom has become less free in this new century, and humor a lot less funny? Good thing we can still watch Seinfeld re-runs. | +Save/Share | | |
