Just Tell Them "No!"

Everyone gets busy at this time of year, whether with The Holidays or an increased workload because of The Holidays, or both. We stop paying the kind of attention to affairs of state that we normally do. But the affairs of state continue, nonetheless. Sometimes I think the heads of state are counting on our decreased attention at this time to work their black magic underneath our radar. Let's not let that happen. If you haven't let your members of Congress hear your thoughts on the issues in the following alert from the League of Conservation Voters, please take a minute to do so today. Under the Blue Action section of our sidebar we have a handy-dandy button, "Congress.org." that will take you to your leaders.

Earlier this week, I gave you an update on Congressional leadership's attempts to use the budget process as a public lands sell-off to corporations and Big Oil.
Today, I'm asking you to take action. Write your member of Congress: Tell them to vote NO on any final budget bill that contains dangerous provisions to open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge or language that sells off millions of acres of public lands.

The House and Senate passed two very different budget reconciliation bills within the last few weeks -- but each contain language that is on corporate America's wish-list. As negotiators attempt to cobble together a final bill, we must let our elected officials know that the budget process shouldn't be used to raid our natural heritage. The Senate wants to give Big Oil access to one of our most precious public lands: the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge -- they mistakenly assert that we can drill our way out of our energy problems.

On the House side, a provision remains that would allow Corporate America to raid public lands that belong to you and me. This careless sell-off amounts to a fire-sale of valuable federal lands that could endanger hunting, fishing, and recreation on millions of acres. Steady bipartisan opposition to these provisions is building, but we must keep the pressure on our elected officials to do the right thing. Write your members of Congress today. Tell them to reject any final budget bill that includes these dangerous land-grab provisions.

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
