Deadeye Dick's cover story is fraying already

Jane Hamsher links to this report:

CBS News White House correspondent Peter Maer reports Texas authorities are complaining that the Secret Service barred them from speaking to Cheney after the incident. Kenedy County Texas Sheriffs Lt. Juan Guzman said deputies first learned of the shooting when an ambulance was called.

But the Secret Service told a different story, saying agents had informed the local sheriff of the shooting about an hour after it happened and that the vice president had been interviewed about the accident by local authorities on Sunday morning, CBS News White House correspondent Bill Plante reports.

Sure sounds like there may have been a scramble to clean up the story. Hopefully they didn't tamper with the crime scene.

John Arovosis quotes Cheney spokeswoman Mary Matalin saying,

"The vice president was concerned. He felt badly, obviously. On the other hand, he was not careless or incautious or violate any of the [rules]. He didn't do anything he wasn't supposed to do."

To which Arovosis responds with a sensible question:

You mean, LIKE SHOOTING AN INNOCENT MAN?! What is it with Bush and Cheney? I mean, I get that they're never going to admit making a mistake in invading Iraq, but how hard is it to admit you made a mistake when you shoot someone and almost kill them? And what does it say about someone who can't?

What all of this suggests is that the White House was more interested in a cover-up than the health of the victim or the public's right to know. Their number one issue was hiding the story, or else they would have told the president at least what happened, and they didn't.

This is downright bizarre. And honestly, someone needs to dig a little deeper into exactly how this "accident" occurred. Usually hunting accidents are accidents, but sometimes they're not. But usually when they're accidents, the shooter has nothing to hide and hides nothing. In this case, the White House was intent on hiding something. And that is bizarre.

Bob Harris has a brief and irreverant post - although as he mentions, satire is hard to top reality with the Bush crew:

How will the White House explain Dick Cheney shooting a guy in the face?
Usually the polls on my site are pretty facetious, but for once I’m actually half-serious. Will it be:

a) Washington, Lincoln, and Roosevelt all shot guys in the face, too
b) The Patriot Act gives Cheney the legal authority to shoot guys in the face
c) The victim’s face was harboring Al-Qaeda's #3 man, or
d) If you’re innocent, you shouldn’t mind a shotgun blast to the face
