Grey Hair, Wrinkles and Jowls on Display

Not sure who's doing Blue's News this week, but I'm pretty sure it's Bruce. He's put me in a very nostalgic mood with his link to the NYT review of Jonathan Demme's concert documentary being released this week: "Neil Young: Heart of Gold," A Weathered Rocker, but Still Unbowed. To say I love Neil Young and his music is not to express anything like the strength of my feelings for either one. He is so much a part of my life - from the Buffalo Springfield years when we were both young, up to the current "Prairie Wind" album, at a point in our lives when we both have grey hair, wrinkles and jowls. His songs have seen me, and all those of my generation, through so much. I really hope this film comes somewhere close enough for me to actually see it.

The nostalgia started earlier in the week, in fact, when I ran across a twelve panel set of drawings by R. Crumb, A Short History of America, a brilliant encapsulation of what we have wrought upon this land with our petroleum culture. When the petroleum reserves are all used up, we will still be left with the landscape of the last several panels in the History. Instead of looking for solutions to Our Oil Addiction, which is to say - to our automobile addiction - I'm afraid we're looking for new ways to keep the Automobile Culture alive and well. Is this the answer?

Anyhow, nostalgia. If you're too young to have had R. Crumb as the companion to your bell-bottomed, dope-smoking, hair-to-your-ass, street-protest days, wander around this wonderful site, The R. Crumb Museum. It's all there, baby: Mr. Natural, Zap Comix, Fritz the Kat, Underground Comix. Check it out, return with me now to those thrilling days of yesteryear, and wonder with me where the hell it all went. How did we get from there to here?

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
