The Spineless Republican CongressI don't know which is worse for our democratic form of government -- the cynicism of the GOP House, or the spineless servility of the Republican Senate. Two news stories today highlight the nature of the corruption of our Congress, and the failure of the legislative branch to fulfill its Constitutional duties. In the Senate, the Republican Intelligence Committee Chair has put off hearings on the President's blatantly illegal circumvention of the FISA statute. In the House, the Republican Intelligence Committee will hold hearings, but they will be a sham. According to the spokesman of the GOP Chairman of that Committee: "This is not an inquiry into the program. It's a comprehensive review of the FISA statute. " He said Mr. Hoekstra "wants to set up a process to move forward and look at the entire statute and ways to modernize it." In short, this President can break any law, and send his Attorney General to the Hill to thumb his nose at the concept of Checks and Balances, and escape any consequences. Congress and the rule of law are so degraded, the President can surveil, detain, and torture to his heart's content -- with no oversight by any court or legislative body. The so-called March of Freedom continues, enabled by the GOP Congress, and it is marching right over our most cherished liberties and democratic values. | +Save/Share | | |
