Choose Courage and MoralityI was posting a comment to Lisa's piece called Choosing Liberalism, when I realized that my comment had grown from a couple of sentences into a full blown rant, a situation I find myself in frequently these days. Here is my rant. Today in a time of great peril, I see progressives divided about how best to take back our country. The conversation comes at an opportune time for those of us on the left of the spectrum. Speaking only for myself, I find the reluctance on the part of the Democratic leadership to deliver a coherent message, to be cowardly and immoral. There can be no doubt today about the direction this Republican junta has taken the country, and we can all wonder when life begins, but the truth is, the Iraqis and Americans this Administration has killed in the last four years were way past the question mark, they were live humans, and we killed them for no good reason. I don't see how we can morally afford to speak of saving the unborn, when we continue to slaughter the living. The conversation that we are having on the pages of this blog, and others just like it all across the country are real and important, it's a conversation that flies in the face of censorship and fear. Americans have lived in silence long enough, and it's time to take that club of fear that the Republicans have muted us with, and snap it into a hundred tiny worthless pieces. There is no reason to question who is right, and who is wrong, just look at the long list of dead soldiers and tell me that their young lives have gained us something other than chaos and shame. Have we sold the lives of American soldiers for the freedom of people who will now begin the process of killing each other? Have we armed and trained those very people? Are we responsible for the mayhem that is about to occur? I want the leaders of the Democratic Party to come forward and vow to stop American involvement in Iraq. I want them to tell the world and the American people that they were wrong, and that they're sorry. And once we seek forgiveness for the crime of killing and arming foreign countries, real people who have clearly already begun the process of life, then and only then will we talk about saving those not yet born. | +Save/Share | | |
