TBV FEATURE: Our First Step

I've mulled over this so many times it's not funny. I've written and re-written this trying to find just the right formula. What should we be doing to win our country back in 2008 and the future? This isn't some errand that a few of us can accomplish. This is a monumental task as great as any attempted by our ancestors. This isn't just winning seats in the house and senate or even winning the White House. Winning with who? The Democrats? That's the best we can hope for?

No, it has to be more than voting. It has to be more than voting for the lesser of two evils. It has to be more than voting for some guy to go vote for us because we don't really believe in democracy (electoral college). It has to be more than playing the charade of our procedural democracy that's completely void of any substance.

We've got to get involved. We should be filling the streets in protest on a daily basis. While our men and women are supposedly fighting for our freedoms in Iraq and Afghanistan the bastards that sent them there are quickly eroding what precious freedoms we have left. If that's not a tragedy, I don't know what is.

So join us in Los Angeles Saturday, March 18, 12 noon to gather at Hollywood and Vine and march to Hollywood and Highland to put a stop to the war and bring the troops home. If you don't live around the LA area, find your local peace events, or start one of your own. You don't want to stand on a street holding a sign? Invite people over to your house for lively discussions. Get people around you informed and involved.

Voting didn't bring an end to Vietnam and voting won't end this war. But we can end this war through organized and dedicated protest. It's not easy, nothing worth fighting for ever is. But that would be a huge step, the necessary first step, towards bringing our country back in order.

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
