Addicted to WarEvery now and then you just have to sing the praise of a book or film that really conveys important information. It's one of those nuggets of truth that when you find it you just want to give it to everybody you meet. Today I'm speaking of the wonderful graphic novel by Joel Andreas, Addicted to War: Why the U.S. can't kick militarism. In just sixty-two pages, Joel Andreas does a remarkable job of providing historical context to our current adventures in Iraq. He also does a marvelous job of illustrating--literally--just what our ridiculous military spending means to this country, from underfunded social programs to environmental disasters due to our nuclear programs, not to mention the millions of deaths around the world and at home. A couple celebrity endorsements, if you will: "Addicted to War is a witty and devastating portrait of U.S. military policy, a fine example of art serving society." "War may be the "health of the state," as Randolph Bourne warned when a pacifist population was being driven to World War I by hysterical propaganda, but it is the curse of the people -- the attackers and the victims. With spare and acid clarity, these snapshots of the real world brilliantly tell us why and how we must rid ourselves of this curse, quickly, or else descend to barbarism and destruction."I had heard about it for some time but hadn't gotten around to getting a copy until recently. If you haven't checked it out, do put it on your reading list. And if you're looking for a wonderful little gift book, this is it. It's a great little stuffing stocker for that stubborn republican in your life. Click on the picture link to order your copy. | +Save/Share | | |
