Laura Indeed Has It Right. And Mary Too.Geeze Louise! It must be getting close to election time again. With all the problems confronting our country right now, (gas prices, border security, amnesty for illegal immigrants, the Iraq war, the upcoming Iran war, the national debt, the trade imbalance, the economy, jobs, etc.) guess what's scheduled to rear its ugly head in the Senate next month. Awww, you got it - legislation that would have the Constitution define marriage as the union between a man and a woman. Talk about BAD timing.Do you think the American public really wants the Senate (or the House) to take time right now to debate writing bigotry into our Constitution? Somehow I doubt you'll find this topic at the top of too many lists today. But then, isn't this just the ticket to turn public concern against the Democrats and raise the approval rates of Republican candidates in the upcoming election? Don't bet the house on it. At least that's the advice of First Lady Laura Bush. The First Lady was interviewed by Chris Wallace on Fox News this Sunday morning. Their conversation was taped at the White House on Friday. What did Mrs. Bush have to say concerning the Marriage Amendment? "I don't think it should be used as a campaign tool, obviously. It requires a lot of sensitivity to just talk about the issue - a lot of sensitivity."Stick that in your bigoted craw, George. But Laura Bush is not the only prominent Republican to come out against the Marriage Amendment recently. Vice President Dick Cheney through his lesbian daughter Mary has also spoken out against it. It seems now that her Father won't be running for office in 2008, Mary is finally free to speak her mind against any formal legislation that would write a marriage law into our Constitution. She's been protesting loudly against the amendment while promoting her new book, "Now It's My Turn." Recently on Fox News, Mary Cheney had this to say: "I hope no one would think about trying to amend the Constitution as a political strategy. I certainly don't know what conversations have gone on between Karl and anybody up on the Hill, but you know, what I can say is look, amending theNice to hear Mary finally letting it rip on the subject. But don't expect Republican leaders to take the advice Laura Bush or Mary Cheney seriously. Senate leader Bill Frist has already lashed out on CNN, leaving little doubt that Republicans will continue covering their faces with egg during the upcoming elections. Said silly Billy: "I basically say right now, marriage is under attack in this country, and we've seen activist judges overturning state by state law, where state legislatures have passed laws defining marriage between a man and a woman, and that's being overturned by a handful of activist judges around the country. And that is why we need an amendment to come to the floor of the United States Senate to define marriage as that union between one man and one woman."Yes, Bill, marriage is under attack, Christmas is under attack, Easter is under attack, Christians are under attack, and Terry Schiavo is under attack. I guess everything is under attack to you and your Senate Buddies except our troops in Iraq, our border with Mexico, and Middle Class Americans. Your strategy has been weighed, Mr. Frist, and it's been measured. And it's been found wanting by no less than your president's wife. Mayhaps you should pay attention to the only Republican with positive poll numbers. | +Save/Share | | |
