Midterm Madness Notices Surprise! GOP Strategy

Well, as you can see, I'm having my own little day of huelga against the process of packing/sorting/taking to Goodwill/getting-ready-for-yardsale that has been our life here for far too long now.

Having just posted on Patricia Madrid, NM's Atty General and NM Congressional District 01 candidate for the House, I was intrigued to find this little piece on American Prospect's (online edition) Midterm Madness:

NM 01: A BREWING GOP NATIONAL STRATEGY? Roll Call today reports on looming GOP efforts to tie ethical lapses to Attorney General Patricia Madrid’s office in an effort to tarnish her ahead of her race against Republican incumbent Heather Wilson. The race, which many observers see as critical for Democrats if not a bell-weather for 2006 as a whole, was expected to be a tough fight for Madrid and now could become bogged down with ugly rhetoric and flying accusations. The nexus of Republican claims centers on separate investigations of two scandals, both involving Democrats, that are being handled through Madrid's AG office. The GOP is trying to assert Madrid's office is not being aggressive enough, alluding to the notion that since some of those being investigated are donors to Madrid, she is actively slowing the investigations down.

There is a pattern developing of a concerted Republican strategy to denigrate Democratic candidates, both challengers and incumbents, with spurious claims of ethical impropriety where none may not exist at all. As with the claims against Alan Mollohan, the Madrid accusations encompass not hard facts such as in the cases of Rep. Bob Ney or Sen. Conrad Burns, but rather in either the superficial appearances of conflicted interests or creating dubious connections to innocuous entities. (Read rest of the piece here.)
So, obla di obla da, life goes on as usual. And, by the way, this Midterm Madness appears to be an American Prospect blog about the November elections, covering candidates and campaigns across the country. Looks like a good resource.
