Capitalism Makes Me Sick

Hundreds of thousands of Katrina victims remain displaced around the country without homes in the richest nation on earth. Along with them we have a couple million more homeless Americans--a large percentage of them men who fought to expand our mighty capitalist empire. Nearly fifty million Americans have no health insurance; another fifty million have such high deductibles that they essentially can't use the coverage they have; and just to drive the point home, medical bills are now the number one reason why Americans go into bankruptcy. One in five kids live at or below poverty.

That's just a small snapshot of the injustice of capitalism in this country. Meanwhile, in the Greatest Country on Earth:

David deMartino just bought a 760-square-foot, one-bathroom condo for $212,900 in the booming market of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He's already ordered custom flooring and cabinets and a flat-screen TV, but he has no plans to move there.That's because the condo is for his collection of cars and motorcycles.

In a sane society humans would come before cars when it came to housing. In a sane world, this man's cars would be kicked out on their trunks so that a real live human family could move in.

Let's just be clear about this. This is not a screed about some overly indulgent narcissist. This is capitalism: a system devoid of humanity based on the old maxim: He who dies with the most toys wins. Millions of our fellow citizens are homeless and we build homes for our automobiles.

It doesn't have to be like this. We can change things. Get active!
