What Are They Thinking? The news from the Middle East is pretty grim this weekend. There were 70 people killed in an explosion in Iraq today, and nearly 200 injured. And what is happening in Gaza? What sort of madness has possessed the Israelis? What do you call it when a country arrests freely elected leaders of another country? What might the rest of the civilized world think about a country that bombs the offices of a political party that they would like to see fall from power? You and I might protest vehemently if that country were Syria or Iran, but that country happens to be Israel, our staunch ally in the middle east, and so we say nothing. What was the point of de-occupying Gaza, if the Israelis were only going to re-occupy? And even though this military action is being described as temporary, the last time Israel occupied foreign territory, it took 30 years for them to to withdraw, and for a mere period of several months. Since we supply Israel with most of its superior military might, I would think that our State Department might speak out against this aggression. Has Israel's response to the kidnapping of one soldier been fair? Maybe Israel's new PM is thinking that his penis is smaller than Sharon's, he is leading a new government, he needs to come out looking like a guy with big balls. But my gut feeling is that Israel never wanted to give up anything, they never wanted peace, and they wanted those elected terrorists back in prison where they belong. And maybe the US doesn't really want a solution in the middle east; after all, a war that lasts for years will keep the Defense Department spending in the trillions, and prop up the economy, after all, weapons are our biggest export. What are the Israelis thinking? I don't know for sure, but I bet it won't get them (or us) any closer to peace. | +Save/Share | | |
