The Gamble of WarWhen a nation relies on military might in place of foreign policy, it's risky. It's always a gamble to invade another nation, we should always think carefully before resorting to armed conflict. When I was about five years old, I was the toughest kid in the neighborhood. I guess I was a bully. One day I decided to fight the toughest boy in the hood, and I got my ass promptly kicked. After I ran home and cried, I realized that if I wanted to be a leader, I needed more than just my smart mouth and tiny fists. As we have learned from Iraq, brute force doesn't always produce a victory. Maybe today, Israel is re-thinking it's foreign policy, after Hezbollah today declared victory and refused to disarm. For those people in Lebanon who are returning to homes buried in rubble, and feel that the Lebanese army did not do enough to protect them from the Israeli bombardment, maybe they are re-thinking the support that they had for the fledgling Lebanese government. It may be that the tides have turned in the Middle East, and it is time to stop the bombing and scurry back to the bargaining table. The stick has failed, but I hope it's not too late for the carrot. | +Save/Share | | |
