Things To Worry AboutAs November approaches, and campaigning gets down and dirty, there are things that worry me. The thing that is most worrisome is of course, another defeat for Democrats. We've been here before, as voters and Americans, at these critical turning points in the democratic process, and we have failed to change the direction of the country. We had a real opportunity in 2004 in the Presidential election, but we Americans voted for 4 more years of the same. If elections were held today, it looks as if there may be a change in leadership in at least the House. This would be great news for the country, but not an effective counter against two more years of the Bush Administration. In January of 2005, George Bush believed that he had a mandate, and since then the war in Iraq has slipped into chaos, we have begun to lose even Afghanistan (if we can truly say that we ever had success there), and there is no change in the way that we conduct ourselves either militarily, or diplomatically in the Middle East. What if Americans hand George Bush another mandate this November? Can the news from Iraq get any more grim? I think it can. Do we want a war against terror to last twenty or thirty more years as the Administration predicts? If war spreads to Iran and Syria, do we want a guy with Rumsfeld's losing record in charge of an expanded war? How bad might things get if we we fail to shift the balance of power in America? I don't know about you, but I'm praying we won't find out. | +Save/Share | | |
