ImagineAs we make another trip around our celestial orb we often begin to contemplate our new year's resolutions. If I may, I'd like to suggest that we all resolve to imagine a better world and pledge to make it real.John Lennon said it best: "You think I'm just a dreamer, but I'm not the only one." With the need for so much education in this country, one might wonder what importance imagination might have. There's no doubt that the public has been dumbed down and education will play an important role in any revolutionary endeavor. But again and again I am struck by the inability of people to even imagine a better world. Again and again I am amazed by people who think, "That's just the way things are." Endless war, global exploitation, institutionalized racism and poverty--to just name a few things--are not "just the way things are." They are policies pursued by the "minority of the opulent", to borrow a phrase by James Madison, regardless of their consequences for the rest of us. The good news is a better world is possible. But it's going to take the same fierce dedication, perseverance, and hard work that our ancestors mustered as they fought to end chattel slavery, win basic rights for women, secure rights for working people, and extend civil rights to all. It won't be easy, but it can be done. The first step is for you to believe in it, to imagine that a better world is possible, and then fight like hell to make it true. Imagine, my brothers and sisters. A better world is possible. | +Save/Share | | |
