Another Good Guy Leaves the Scene. Remembering Robert DrinanMany readers of this blog may be too young to recognize the name of Robert Drinan, and putting his title in front of the name, Father Robert Drinan, may not help. For Democrats, peaceniks, Nixon impeachment addicts, of a certain age, such as myself, this name may bring up memories of a time when giants walked the land. We are losing these giants one by one, and today brings the sad loss of this particular giant of a man. The Boston Globe has a very complete obituary, Congressman/priest Robert Drinan Dies, and NPR's Fresh Air did a piece on him this morning. They included an interview which originallyl aired in February of 1988. The audio for this program will be available later today, around 3 pm ET, Remembering Father Drinan. The Globe obit will provide those who are new to Drinan's history with all the pertinant facts, but the one fact that I'dlike to point out here, is this:On July 31, 1973, he introduced the first resolution to impeach the president --though not for any high crimes and misdemeanors relating to the Watergate scandal, but rather over theadministration's secret bombing campaign inCambodia.I can only hope that Drinan's history as a man of total moral and ethical action in Congress will serve as an example to some of our younger members of Congress today, and instill in them the courage to follow his example in refusing to go along with administration decisions that he knew to be morally wrong. | +Save/Share | | |
