Mean People SuckA few weeks ago, I did a post on the Miss USA scandal, that little splurb of news about Miss USA and her coke habit, and the second chance given to her by Donald Trump. I have to make a correction to my post, when I wasn't calling her Barbie, I was calling her Miss America, and some straight girls at work, horrified at the gaffe, lectured me on the difference between Miss America and Miss USA. Apparently one of the Misses can go on to become Miss Universe, and the other (I forget now which one) will remain an American icon, her tiara hitting the glass ceiling of beauty contests, and her destiny is shopping malls in places like Wisconsin and Ohio. I think she also gets money for college, where she can qualify to marry Dr. Ken, Lawyer Ken, or MBA Ken. So it's not a total loss.I'm not sure if she gets to keep the tiara. You'll have to ask a straight woman. The scandal of Barbie and the coke parties has paled in the wake of the Rosie and Donald war. It started with Rosie calling Donald Trump bankrupt and making a great joke about his comb-over, and has escalated to some serious name calling, Donald Trump calling Rosie fat and degenerate, and threatening law suits, and Barbara Walters having to jump in and make statements about Donald Trump's casinos being bankrupt, and not Donald himself (what's the difference exactly?) and on and on, with petty meanness and name calling on the major networks. This country has become mean and nasty, maybe not in shopping malls in places like Wisconsin and Ohio, but on mainstream television, and what's more disturbing is that the mean and nasty people are actually respected in this country. I used to believe that you could win over a mean person with kindness, and it does sometimes work, but no one ever respects a person who is kind. In a mean world, a kind person will get stomped on and disrespected, and labeled as a wimp. At the workplace, you are beaten by your superiors, and you in turn beat your subordinates, because if you don't, the beatings will continue until you are completely demoralized. If you are not mean by nature, you have to force yourself to beat those around you, (no one ever wants to be called the nice boss, because that means that you are ineffective), and by the time you get home at night, it's hard to transform yourself suddenly into a loving spouse or parent, maybe the beatings continue. And maybe we find ourselves living in a society that thrives on cruelty and values torture, and responds to perceived threats with force. When ill mannered people become the norm, and cruelty is respected, the fabric of society has become unraveled, and there is no going back to that kind person you once were. It's all about me, and if you disagree, F-you and here's to me. | +Save/Share | | |
