New Year's Eve in Austria

Or, in German, "Silvester in Österreich". According to the YouTube label, this is from Vienna, this current New Year's. For all I know, it could be Sadr City, Baghdad, on an active night. But I'll assume it's Vienna.

The tradition in Austria is to listen to the "Blue Danube Waltz" (Johann Strauss, Jr) at midnight and dance the Vienna waltz to it. You know, kissing too, but we're talking Austria, not France! This is 10 1/2 minutes of the late Herbert von Karajan conducting the Vienna Philharmonic Orcestra in "The Blue Danube Waltz". Yes, Von Karajan was a repulsive character, but he was a talented conductor.

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
