No Border WallVia a comment to my post Isn't The Environment Just A Big Bother (comment was on the cross-posting at my personal blog, Quid Nunc), I've made the acquaintance of a coalition along the US/Mexico border calling itself NO BORDER WALL. The coalition states its purpose thusly:
NO BORDER WALL is a grassroots coalition of groups and individuals united in our belief that a border wall will not stop illegal immigration or smuggling and will not make the United States any safer. A border wall tells the world that we are a fearful nation, not a strong and confident nation, and that we are unable to address difficult issues in an intelligent and meaningful way. It will do irreparable harm to our borderlands and our country as a whole. Many of us live on the border, and we know what will be lost if a wall tears through our communities, farms, and natural areas. We urge our elected representatives to reject the border wall and repeal the Secure Fence Act and the Real ID Act.The group has several websites, most notably this one, which contains an Environmental Impact page showing in great detail the harm this construction is doing, will do, to the fragile ecosystem of habitat and wildlife corridors along our southern border. The group also has an action blog, No Border Wall - Take Action, with a petition to sign and lots of information on how we as citizens need to act immediately to halt construction of this most damaging symbol of the fearful nation the USA has become under the Bush Administration. It's a good petition, which I urge anyone worried about the lack of concern for environmental legislation shown by Chertoff's action this past week to sign and add your personal comments.
