Mission Accomplished (continued)Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey, quoted in today's Philadelphia Inquirer: This is not 'mission accomplished.' This is a mission gone awry. After 5 years, at least 4,061 of our Troops have died in the Iraq war. Many thousands more have been seriously injured. General Petraeus and his "surge" continue the President's failed policy under a new name. The Iraqi political progress which the surge was to facilitate has not happened, and is not likely to happen. We continue because we continue, and our presidential candidates talk about gas taxes and screwy clergymen. General Cody and others have insisted that we cannot sustain the effort in Iraq at these levels without breaking the Army. Admiral Fallon was dismissed for arguing that we should reduce our force levels in Iraq. Cody is gone. Fallon is gone. Petraeus is promoted. Five years after "Mission Accomplished" and we still haven't defined the mission, and still have no exit strategy. A pointless waste of human life goes on and on, with no end in sight.
