Michelle Obama

Maureen Dowd writes in the NY Times:

Mrs. Obama is the new, unwilling contestant in Round Two of the sulfurous national game of “Kill the witch.”

[snip]

There are creepy Web sites, like TheObamaFile.com, dedicated to painting Michelle as a female version of Jeremiah Wright, an angry black woman, the disgruntled, lecturing “Mrs. Grievance” depicted on the cover of National Review.
I am concerned - not because Republicans are up to their usual tricks, but because some of the hostility to Michelle comes from Democrats. They seem to be worried that she is a liability in this election - and have transformed that worry into disdain and disrespect. Even I have to ask if there isn't some perverse mysogyny at work here - as if racism isn't enough of an issue.

As this campaign moves forward to November, we will be participating in an experiment as bold as any in my lifetime. Though she is not a candidate in the race, how Michelle Obama fares over the months to come will say more about us than it will of her.

Peronally, I think she is fantastic. I wish her well.

UPDATE: In my haste to comment, I missed Bruce's earlier post on this topic.

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
