Straight-TalkJohn McCain's latest views on adoption by gay parents, as quoted by the NY Times (July 13):Q: President Bush believes that gay couples should not be permitted to adopt children. Do you agree with that?McCain seems pretty clear here, although his attitude suggests a new implication of the term "straight-talk". Apparently, his campaign people thought he went too far, and sent a "clarification" to Andrew Sullivan. McCain could have been clearer in the interview in stating that his position on gay adoption is that it is a state issue, just as he made it clear in the interview that marriage is a state issue. He was not endorsing any federal legislation.Glad we got that cleared up. He's not for a federal law to strip gay parents of their legally adopted children, nor even for federal laws that might prevent such adoptions. He is however firmly and clearly for having the states pass such legislation. Technorati Tags: John McCain, Adoption by gay parents, What'd I say?, Straight Talk redefined | +Save/Share | | |
