It doesn't go awayThis is one reason I keep saying that the torture issue from the Cheney-Bush administration isn't going away. The Chilean folk singer Victor Jara was tortured and murdered by the Pinochet junta just after they took power in 1973, with substantial assistance from the CIA under the Nixon administration. Today, 36 years later, someone is being charged in his murder: Procesan a un ex recluta acusado del asesinato del cantautor Víctor Jara El Mundo (Madrid) 27.05.2009. I first heard of Victor in this song sung by Arlo Guthrie, probably on the 1978 tour this You Tube video comes from. (Embedding is disabled.) The song is fairly explicit about how he died. Arlo wrote the music, the lyrics are by Adrian Mitchell. Here's a tribue to him by Pete Seeger, featuring some of Victor's own singing: Tags: arlo guthrie, pete seeger, victor jara | +Save/Share | | |
