Mr. Woolley's RantThere was a unique letter to the editor in the Arizona Republic today. While I don't usually quote these in full, I will this time:Homosexuals 'Spin' Marriage Issue Geeze Louize. Mr. Woolley gives NO clue as to who the "they" are that he blames for coining all these phrases, other than assuming they were coined by the nebulous masses of homosexuals that have lived within his lifetime, I guess. Let's see if we can track down the sources of these words for him. Gay: It all started in the 16th Century when the word "gay" was twisted to mean promiscuity. By the 20th Century it was corrupted by becoming an offensive word for homosexuals, though no specific date for that is given. So you see, Mr. Woolley, homosexuals did not coin the word. It was coined by homophobes like you. Gay Rights: The term "homosexual" didn't appear in the European press until the late 1860s. In 1869, a German lawyer named Karl Heinrich Ulrichs became the first self-confessed "Urning" (German for "Uranian" as he termed himself) to publicly speak out for Urning Rights. The word Urning was later changed to "Homosexualitat" by writer Karoly Maria Kertbeny, who originally claimed himself to be a "normalsexualer." Homophobia: This term was coined by heterosexual psychologist George Weinberg in the late 1960s, first appearing in print in 1969. Now, please note that ALL of these words were around a lot longer than the word "spin" which was first used in a political context by Spencer Rich in an article for the Washington Post in 1977. So I think Mr. Woolley is attempting to blow smoke up our collective arses with his unrestrained rant about homosexuals. Given that, why should anyone believe anything Mr. Woolley has to say on the subject? Might I just note that neither Mr. Woolley nor anyone else who's accused the legalization of same-sex marriage of "hurting or threatening" the institution of marriage ever answered the question he denounces as homosexual spin. Now why is that?? As for society drawing lines, society drew a line concerning black people marrying white people. It drew a line concerning women voting. It drew a line concerning people who believed the Earth was round. It drew many lines concerning the rights of certain religions to practice freely. It drew a line concerning proper bathing suites for people. It drew a line concerning serving alcoholic beverages. It drew a line concerning people of color sending their children to white schools, using white restrooms, dining in white restaurants, sleeping in white hotels and even playing the game of baseball. In NONE of these instances (and a lot more that I could have listed) has society proved correct. What makes anyone think society is correct concerning the lines it and Mr. Woolley draws for homosexuals?? | +Save/Share | | |
