My Homework:PBU25

My fellow Blue Voice friends gave me some homework last night in our weekly chat. I would have prefered a research assignment, maybe something like interviewing Angelina Jolie about her UN work, but that assignment wasn't available. Good thing, I would have probably stuttered and gawked, and that would so not be cool. So the following is my homework.

God Save the Queen.

If it weren't for the British leaking those Downing Street Documents, (there are apparently quite a few of them, so I think we can start calling them the Downing Street Papers), we might have gone decades without any proof that the criminal war in Iraq was premeditated. Of course the mainstream press is claiming that these papers don't prove anything, but I think the mere timeline of these discussions is proof that the decision to go to war was made much earlier than our leaders are telling us. The interesting thing about reading the Downing Street Papers, is that it's almost like a crime novel. You get to witness the actual planning of the crime. We all saw the crime, it is still going on, we saw it front and center in our very own living rooms on CNN. It's chilling to hear world leaders speak dispassionately about an event that will cause the loss of 100,000 human beings. Who needs to watch CSI, when you can watch real life criminals every night on CNN? The part that hasn't been written yet is the last scene, where all the bad guys go to jail.

But that only happens on TV.

The really creepy part from the second memo is this:

"Time will be required to prepare public opinion in the UK that it is necessary to take military action against Saddam Hussein. An information campaign will be needed which has to be closely related to an overseas information campaign designed to influence Saddam Hussein, the Islamic World and the wider international community. This will need to give full coverage to the threat posed by Saddam Hussein, including his WMD, and the legal justification for action."

Except for one little thing, the information in the campaign was wrong, and so this war is illegal.

No one in Britain is denying the authenticity of the documents. I get the feeling that the UK is trying to squirm out of their liability by claiming that they were only going along to try to control the crazy Yanks. And why now? Cause the shitstorm is in full force. The insurgency is out of control, and we, the Great Powers of the West might actually lose the war. But the papers clearly show that the Brits knew exactly what they were getting into, and went ahead with it regardless. That makes it murder 1.

Multiplied by 100,000.

No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
