Snowed, in SummerA brief bit of homework before I hop into my fuel-efficient little car and head to Washington for the rally. The Senate has been hashing over the Energy Bill, already passed by the House, all week. Very little attention has been paid to this in the media. I have seen a couple of mentions in the NYT, and there was one article on both AOL and Yahoo's news yesterday about how the President wants an Energy Bill passed, y'all, because it's summer and it's hot and folks are really going to get mad if we don't do something to get those energy prices down. I have lots more to say about the Energy Bill, and how it will do absolutely nothing to bring down gas prices - but that's for another day.Today is for giving you this excellent article by Ross Gelbspan about why we don't hear a whole lot from the media about the Energy Bill and Global Warming and the whole beastly mess. As he says: "Why the lack of major media attention to one of the biggest stories of this century? The reasons have to do with the culture of newsrooms, the misguided application of journalistic balance, the very human tendency to deny the magnitude of so overwhelming a threat, and, last though not least, a decade-long campaign of deception, disinformation, and, at times, intimidation by the fossil fuel lobby to keep this issue off the public radar screen." They are finally talking about Global Warming and Climate Change in the Senate, but when I show you the list of folks arrayed against doing anything about it, you'll see why you shouldn't get your hopes up too high about any actual measures being taken by this Congress. | +Save/Share | | |
