Harriet MiredCartoon by Auth, from Slate Online Funny how a few weeks ago we were all supposed to ignore Mr Roberts's fervent Catholicism -- it wasn't relevant, we were told. A private matter and nothing that could be held against him. Of course, we agreed. Now we hear that Bush chose Ms Miers largely on the basis of her religious faith, and we are expected to accept this argument on her behalf. Nothing private or irrelevant about Harriet and her solid evangelical credentials -- no sir. Aside from her gushing and fawning and obvious credentials as an "obsequious instrument of his pleasure", it seems faith is her main claim to the job! After all, it is her religious faith that is presented as justification for her nomination when the red-neck right-wing radical-religious call to complain. For all the Bush claims to character and integrity, one would think such blatant cynicism and dishonesty could never taint the most important appointments and decisions of his Presidency. You would be wrong. | +Save/Share | | |
