Nobody wants to hear this story...Update to my earlier post "This is a leadership problem."Captain Ian Fishback met yesterday with Senator John McCain, according to this article in The New York Times. These are new allegations of old events -- the abuses he has reported date back to the time before and during the Abu Ghraib scandals, which supports the contention that the problem is a bit more widespread than the Pentagon would have you believe. According to the Times article, the Army is investigating these new charges. Apparently, despite the horrific abuses of Abu Ghraib, and the many investigations they told us about, the Army didn't know about these other abuses. One wonders why we have to rely on men such as Captain Fishback, who has put his career on the line, and had to overcome pressure from senior officers to protect the good name and honor of his unit, to bring us the truth. The Bush-Rumsfeld military is playing out the clock on the abuse scandal, hoping that America will decide not to care. Withholding the photos, suppressing the evidence, glossing over the reality, and laying blame on a few privates and noncoms. Fortunately, there are a few leaders whose pride in the military and whose personal sense of honor has been offended by these abuses. Men like John McCain. But as for the rest of us, I sense that we are right where Bush wants us to be. Tired of the story. Bored, disinterested. Unless you have more photos, we are prepared to focus on the fall TV schedule, thank you... Nobody wants to hear this story, but it isn't going away. | +Save/Share | | |
