So what's Really going on?

Is the US really trying to keep foreign fighters from pouring into Iraq from Syria, or are we opening a new front in a war to try and re-make the Middle East into something more palatable to the US?

Can we trust the military to give us the real picture? How about the Bush Administration? How comfortable are we with the official word coming from the podium of power?
