There'll Be A Change in the Weather...McCarthy wrote this article perhaps too soon to include the twenty-seventh tropical Atlantic storm, Zeta (Tropical Storm Zeta Shatters Records), in his count. It is only the sixth December tropical storm since we have been keeping track of such weather history, a tropical storm outside the perameters of tropical storm season, a full month after the season had officially ended. When all the figures are in, this may prove to have been the warmest year in the global temperature record, although in mid-December British meteorological scientists were saying it was still just exceeded by 1998.
