Flotsam and Jetsam

It's the weekend, it's post-holiday, post-bowl games (how about them Longhorns?) January, we're all suffering from a little torpor, so I thought it was a good time for a link fiesta. There's always things that just never make it into posts, but are too good not to mention. Every now and then I'm going to round some up and mention them. Here goes:

 Yet another list of predictions for the coming year, but this one is James Howard Kunstler, author of The Long Emergency, from his blog Clusterfuck Nation: " Six " Predictions for the coming year: housing bubble, energy and economy, war, scandal. Not a pretty picture, but always a wild read.

 Still on the theme of the coming year, All the Right Movies, a preview of this year's green-tinted movies from Grist Magazine. Not entirely serious, more in the "fun" genre.

 Jeff McIntire-Strasbourg at Sustainablog has this good news: Consumer Reports Goes Organic. Jeff says the February issue of the mag has a great article on buying organic, while still pinching your pennies.

 Greener Magazine reports on "nature deficit disorder," a term author Richard Louv uses for kids who never get outside. Kids who, in fact, spend 6 hours a day sitting and staring at some sort of electronic screen. "Green Hour" reports on a movement to get the nation's kids outside for an hour every day to play and learn how they fit in the natural order of the world.

 This one is off the green theme, but I want very much to bring it to people's attention. The Madgeneral has a beautifully written rant about the human costs of this war, " The Cost of Junk Freedom, Part 2."
