SOTU Preview

An excerpt of a draft of the President's State of the Union speech was leaked to me this afternoon. I do not have the whole speech -- this fragment was all that Barney could carry in his mouth:

The economy is strong; the military is strong; the war in Iraq continues to go according to plan. I will not waste time on all the many ways in which the state of our union is stronger than ever.

Instead I will ask you tonight to focus on a place where things are very bad - worse than ever. Darfur.

Millions of people are living under daily threat of being killed in a violent attack, of starving to death, and of dying for lack of the simplest medical attention. Perhaps 200,000 have already lost their lives in the genocide that is taking place in this troubled region.

In the next few months, if nothing is done, as many as 500,000 more lives may be lost.

We must act. Now.

I don't know if this will really be in the President's speech (it could just be one of Barney's pranks). But all kidding aside -- this is what we should be hearing from the leader of the greatest nation on the planet.

An excellent article appeared in the Op-Page of the NY Times today, calling for America to use its postion as head of the UN Security Council (for the next 28 days) to push for UN intervention. Check it out.

Time is of the essence. We must act. Now.

UPDATE: Barney is a lyin' dog.
