TBV Feature: Winning in 2008
Over the next few weeks I want to focus on the future, and to open a discussion (with those who care to comment) of three things:
-- what do we want to change?
-- how can we make change happen?
-- who do we want to lead?
In future posts, I will expand on each topic, but here are some of my thoughts:
-- What I most want to change is the character and purpose of American government. Today we live under a government heavily influenced by money and the people who have it. Our government serves the interests of the haves, and especially the interests of big corporations and their elite executive class. The common man is getting screwed, and this has to change.
-- Change will not happen unless we can reach across America and engage people from every state and station of life. We have to create a coalition of Americans capable of overturning a powerful Republican machine, and this will not be easy. The radicalism of the Bush administration has pulled many of us into an angry opposition, and has divided us from others who share many of our core values. We have been divided, and conquered, by a right-wing minority. We must heal the divide.
-- Who can help to communicate the vision of a future in which government serves the people and our shared values? Who can bridge the divide between people of goodwill and common interests? Perhaps it will be easier to sort this out when we have considered where we want to go, and how we can get there. In this case, there is wisdom in not putting the horse before the cart.
