The Fear of Love

I have never yet yielded to my constant desire to post poems, here in this political blog. But, I'm afraid I'm going to lose that strong stance right now. Because I believe it says just what she was saying, I offer it as a sort of coda to Tankwoman's post on the power of love. If only we could all realize that this standing in an open field, heads nodding in the wind, is indeed the universal human condition...if only.

The Fear of Love, by Wendell Berry

I come to the fear of love
as I have often come,
to what must be desired
and what must be done.

Only love can quiet the fear
of love, and only love can save
from diminishment the love
that we must lose to have.

We stand as in an open field,
blossom, leaf, and stem,
rooted and shaken in our day,
heads nodding in the wind.

FEATURED QUOTE

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."

-- Cecil Day-Lewis from Where Are The War Poets?
