Jerry Brown on the state of American freedomJerry Brown, former California governor and current mayor of Oakland, is running this year for state attorney general. At his campaign Web site, he says the following as part of a brief campaign statement:Our government - under George Bush - is eroding basic human rights. Whole classes of people are declared outside the protection of law. Fundamentalists are stepping up their attacks on Roe vs. Wade. Washington increasingly pre-empts state laws to weaken worker and consumer protections and gut critical environmental safeguards. (my emphasis)Brown as state attorney general could provide some exciting moments. We may see some "states rights" action in the original Jeffersonian sense of defending basic civil liberties against illegal federal actions. If Schwarzenegger gets re-elected as governor, Jerry may give him some headaches, too. | +Save/Share | | |
