Progressive Christian VoicesWonky's recent excellent post, The Peace Activists' Rescue and Reaction from the Rabid Right, reminds me of something I've been meaning to post for several days. My friend Gannet Girl, of the blog Search the Sea, recently posted this piece, Christianity in Action:For those of my friends who view Christianity with skepticism, ridicule, or boredom; for those over at The Blue Voice who wonder if anyone has ever heard of liberal Christians; for those who somehow equate Christianity with patriotism or the Republican Party or the United States of America; for those (I count myself in this group) who are just an apathetic group resting our behinds in the pews ~Her link is to an article on the Huffington Post called In Memoriam Tom Fox, and it ties right in to Wonky Muse's piece. Gannet Girl brings us here at TBV into the fray, as people who wonder why we so seldom hear about progressive (liberal) Christians in today's media. The Huffington Post piece explores that topic, and deplores it as well. We know that there are peacemakers and true followers of Christianity at work everywhere in our world. We also know that the rightwing talkshow hosts, news commentators and bloggers make fun of them and despise them. I honor Tom Fox and all the Christian Peacekeepers, as I honor my Christian friends who work in the inner-cities of Houston, San Antonio, L.A. helping immigrants, aiding homeless and hungry people to find work, shelter, food. It is Rush Limbaugh who called the CPT activists "a bunch of leftist feel-good hand-wringers," and admitted (on air) that part of him liked the fact of their kidnapping. True Christians are to be deeply honored; it is those who use Christianity as a front for hatred, political capital and gain, oppression and downright evil whom we do not honor. More stories of liberal or progressive Christianity at work in the world are welcome. | +Save/Share | | |
