When the Wheels Come Off

The news was all good today. It almost seems as if American justice is a living and palpable thing, if you listen closely, you can almost hear it's pulse. And while I would love to celebrate the demise of the Hammer, I agree with some of the comments here that it's too early to feel safe. I won't feel safe while lawmakers are subject to bribery, and legislation is still for sale. The day that we see Tom Delay in one of those orange jumpsuits will get us closer to justice, but K Street hasn't begun to sublet the office space just yet, there is still a brisk business to be done purchasing favors from our elected officials. The system is broken, and the recent reform legislation has merely put a band-aid on a festering wound.

Seeing the wheels coming off of the Republican Money Train is heartening. But we must be careful not to rejoice too much because a few offenders are now looking at indictments. There are worse things than bribery, worse crimes than the mere thieving of hardworking American's tax dollars. There are crimes more grievous than allowing corporations to avoid taxes. The crimes that go unpunished are the crimes of war. The crime of invading another nation on a flimsy pretext that is now completely proven to be either an outright lie, or the most incompetent failure of government in US history, that crime goes unpunished. That crime of murder most foul, not only of the citizens of another nation, but of our own sons and daughters, that crime continues. It's as if there is no law and order, and the leaders of this country both Democrat and Republican, refuse to admit to wrong-doing and refuse to stop the criminal behavior.

When the wheels come completely off, I wonder if the Bush Machine will still be in motion, having lost the brakes and the steering, with no one driving? What Democrat will be brave enough to leap onto the train wreck and finally attempt to stop it? The wheels of American Justice are too slow to catch up to all of the criminal behavior that is rampant in Washington DC, and we must put a stop to the reckless train of war before it consumes all of our resources, and the lives of more Americans.

We need to win in November, there is no alternative.

I just hope that we still have time to avoid the disaster that is certainly coming. November is our last chance.

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
