Flip Flop?''Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.''-- Dixie Chick Natalie Maines, at a London concert in March 2003The Dixie Chicks are at it again, making "controversial statements" about the president. Natalie Maines initially apologized after making the above remarks, but recently she said: “I don't feel he [the president] is owed any respect whatsoever."So now the press say she "flip flopped," but is it true? With all the public pressure it was no surprise to anybody that the Dixie Chicks quickly issued an apology. I think what is inspiring is that after giving into the pressure they realized what had happened, stuck to their guns, and voiced their opinion of the George W. Bush. The reaction to the Maine's original statement that she was "ashamed" of the president is quite illustrative of our culture. A group of American citizens publicly express disdain for a public servant who is committing war crimes in the names of the American people, the very people he lied to in order to committ these grave crimes, and there is public outrage? People in this country are outraged that a citizen would speak out against the war criminal that currently occupies the White House. The real flip floppers are Americans who are too timid to hold our own government to the same standards we wish to hold others. Of course Bush should be criticized, but let's not forget our esteemed Congress that gave George W. Bush a blank check to wage war. Did you hear his excuse about spying on American citizens? He referred back to the blank check he got. In fact, you can be sure that he will refer back to his blank check over any crimes he committs. Who can blame him? | +Save/Share | | |
