Macaca Man Slips in the Polls

George Allen of Virginia has lost a lot of ground in the last few weeks. After exposing himself as the racist he truly is, he's found his campaign in a true struggle.

Not long after Sen. George Allen’s “macaca” remark to S.R. Sidarth gleaned national coverage, including pointed editorials from around the commonwealth, three new polls show challenger James Webb (D) closing the gap, and in one case leading.

A Zogby/Wall Street Journal poll released this week shows the political newcomer ahead of the White House aspirant. The Zogby poll has Webb with a 47.9 to 46.6 lead, within the margin of error.
Allen had enjoyed a solid double-digit lead in polls since Webb won the Democratic Party nomination in June. A Rasmussen poll released two weeks ago showed Allen with just a 47-42 lead. And a SurveyUSA poll, also released about two weeks ago, had the race even closer with Allen clinging to a 48-45 lead, within the margin of error. Political pundits routinely point to an incumbent’s vulnerability if they are polling under 50 percent.

The last time I checked, the Democrats were expected to take 5 Senate seats in the November elections. The re-election of George Allen was never in play. Democrats need 6 seats to re-take the Senate, and how cool would it be if Macaca Man gave us the win?

I've worked in a few parts of Virginia, and while I have to say that there is a lot of racism, I also have to say that most Virginians feel that a public racist slur is socially and politically unacceptable.

These red-state people might surprise us.
