Who would Jesus torture?David Neiwert posted this YouTube video in Torture and Jesus Orcinus blog 09/26/06 as an example of a good usage of Christian religious imagery to oppose the Cheney-Bush torture policy. I think it does a good job of framing the issue with imagery that resonates with Christians but that secular or non-devout viewers can also clearly understand.Duncan Black (Atrios) posted today about the fact that he doesn't address religious issues as such or try to use religious language in discussing politics. He writes, "It's something I don't understand. It's gibberish to me." Unfortunately, the Democrats don't really have the option in today's environment to discuss issues in strictly secular terms. The Christian Right has succeeded in injecting sectarian language into politics. And so, at a minimum, the Dems have to spike the notion shamelessly promoted by the Reps that Democrats are anti-religious. Of course, religious Christians have our own reasons to be concerned about the Christian Right identifying the faith with causes like support of torture, including simulated drowning and the other practices that the Cheney-Bush administration has used. | +Save/Share | | |
