ChillsI've been feeling pretty good about the way the country is coming around to conclusions that most of us progressives came to three years ago, the idea that war has gone horribly wrong, that the country is headed towards a disaster, and that change is needed quickly. Even if there are still a percentage of Americans that believe in the war in Iraq, there is a growing awareness in this country that the Bush Administration has made some disastrous choices, and quite possibly done more harm to our national security. I've been optimistic about the outcome of the mid-term elections, and while I don't see a Democratic take-over of the House as salvation, I see it as a step in the right direction. I was feeling hope for the first time in years that my country might begin the process of correcting some of the mistakes we have made in the last few years, or at least stop making the same ones repeatedly. Hope is something I haven't felt in a while. And then I heard Karl Rove yesterday on NPR. Rove said that he was reviewing 68 polls a week, and that "unlike the general public, I'm allowed to see the polls on the individual races," as opposed to public polls reported in the media. And I thought to myself, " maybe he knows something we don't know." Which is likely because I'll bet Karl Rove knows a lot of somethings we don't know. He might have some good friends who run the companies that sell voting machines, and he might know, just like we know, that they can be easily hacked, and have no paper trail. And then I thought, "No way! How can they hack twenty or thirty different machines in so many different places? It's not possible!" I forgot about it until today when I got ready to post this piece, and I Googled Karl Rove, and came up with this headline. Karl Rove Announces Plans to Steal Election '06 The things that are possible in this election give me chills. I don't know what will happen to this country if these voting machines are tampered with, and we end up with questionable results. I don't know if Americans will even care. We are left with lingering doubts after two presidential elections, and have to trust the very people who have the most to gain, or lose if the balance of power shifts. And the stakes could not be higher. If you're not afraid, you're not paying attention. | +Save/Share | | |
