Duke Cunningham Prosecutor Fired By White House

How ridiculous is this?

The Bush administration has quietly asked San Diego U.S. Attorney Carol Lam, best known for her high-profile prosecutions of politicians and corporate executives, to resign her post, a law enforcement official said.

Lam, a Bush appointee who took the helm in 2002, was targeted because of job performance issues – in particular that she failed to make smuggling and gun cases a top priority, said the official, who declined to be identified because Lam has yet to step down.
So this woman who did a fantastic job bringing down Republican congressman Duke Cunnigham, most corrupt politician in modern history, is rewarded with a pink slip because she didn't focus on small time smuggling and gun cases instead? Then again, Republican congressman might be the operative term in this whole paragraph.

Punishing achievers and rewarding failures (Medal of Freedom, anyone?).

Only in Bushworld.

Laura Rozen also thinks it suspicious, Lam being just one of several US attorneys fired recently, with some replaced by lawyers friendly to the party. Hmm...

David Lat notes the other reason given for the firing was that Lam didn't focus on "routine and repetitive" border crimes. But of course. Illegal immigrants are a bigger threat than lawmakers who sell the nation to the highest bidder. Slaps forehead.

The most plausible reason yet comes from Joseph at Cannonfire, who thinks Lam is getting too nosy regarding other lawmakers involved in the Cunningham scandal, nosy enough to make the CIA and the Hill nervous.

Defend the bad against the worse."
