A Real Gasser

It seems every time I start to think we Americans are an intelligent people, using rational thought processes to reach educated conclusions, I’m brought back to reality by another insipid diatribe published in the Letters to the Editors section of the Arizona Republic.

Today’s gem:

Environmental lobby to blame for gas prices

Gasoline prices are skyrocketing out of sight and there is no end in sight.

We are all looking for someone to blame – the oil companies, President Bush, the
Middle Eastern countries, our gas-guzzling cars.

Well, my friends, let me tell you who the real culprits are. They are our own home-grown, radical tree hugging environmentalists who, through the liberal courts, have virtually put an end to any domestic oil exploration and drilling.

They have made it impossible too build any new refineries in this country, therefore limiting our supply of oil and gasoline.

This has made us dangerously dependent on unstable Middle Eastern countries who are not our friends and can charge any price they want for their oil, or cut it off completely.

Protecting the environment is necessary but not at the expense of putting our country at the mercy of other countries.

Larry Larson
Safford, Arizona

I’m beginning to believe that the Republic looks for the wackiest, most unbelievable point of view from some cow-town, grew up under a rock, home schooled by a coyote, extremist to print in their rag.

Obviously, it’s the environmentalists who are lining their pockets with the profits from increased gas prices. How could we not see that? Where has this great truth been hiding for the past months? Certainly Bush and his Saudi pals have nothing to do with it. One wonders why the major oil companies haven’t given their grossly climbing profits to charity in order to expose this cruel conspiracy by the green guys to use gas price increases to further their unholy attack on the world of the common man? It would take the onus off these innocent, misunderstood, oil men, the protectors of middle class America.

How could I have been so blind?

"It is the logic of our times
No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
