Mean PeopleThis morning, even at 10 am, it was too hot to go outside. Like most of the country, I am experiencing a wave of that hot, soupy, steamy, disgusting weather, and since it is not so healthy to be outdoors, I sat and watched CNN this morning. The bad thing about having access to 24 hour news, is that when there's no news, the headlines and stories repeat themselves over and over, until you think you might be capable of flinging heavy objects at your very expensive flat screen TV. It seems as if when there are particularly stupid stories to report, there are never any breaking headlines to interrupt, and the stupidity goes on unchecked. This morning there was a story on CNN about some legislation proposed in Massachusetts, that will protect fat people and very short people from employment discrimination. At first, I thought the need for a law defending short and fat people was a bit much, don't we have anything more pressing issues in this country, and aren't there a few more important stories for CNN to report? Shit, the President just signed a bill that makes it legal to eavesdrop on American citizens, I would think that if a story needed repeating, that one would be it. But CNN said not a word about the eavesdropping, they kept up with the fat story. I was like...who the F cares? Until CNN brought on the expert. The CNN expert was really kind of venomous, spouting off about how much fat people cost the insurance companies, and how providing them with a law that protects them from discrimination will just encourage them to get fatter. The expert was not shown on camera, but she sounded like one of those skinny uptight personal trainers who have an eating disorder, and think that women should shrink themselves to an anorexic size 2. Just listening to this expert convinced me that fat people do need a law that protects them from discrimination. It's almost as if overweight people have become the new punching bag for Americans, you can't hate blacks and Latinos anymore at work, so why not hate the fat gurls? People don't gain weight intentionally, it's not a conscious decision, it just happens from circumstances, and it's hard to reverse. Women get pregnant, or you fracture your knee, or you turn 40, and all of a sudden you have put on an additional 20 pounds that no amount of dieting seems to take off. Nobody wakes up in the morning and decides that they want to become fat, and women are the most vicious discriminators of other over-weight women. I think Oprah looks less like herself, now that she is thin. She seems diminished. I shut off the mean news show, and took a nap on the couch. I dreamed I worked at the local gym with an office full of size 2 personal trainers. In my dream, I ate boxes of donuts until I got so fat that I took up all of the office space, and I crushed the skinny bitches against the walls with my body fat. When I woke up, I felt powerful. | +Save/Share | | |
