White NightsI had one of those really bad nights last night, one of those nocturnal horrors when every possible Bad Thing that could happen parades across the ceiling and sleep recedes into the impossible distance. After such nights it's a relief to finally get out of bed and come turn on the computer to read about the actual Bad Things that are happening. Except, this morning, when I came over to TBV to read the latest posts, I discovered that two of my nocturnal fantasies were also preying on the minds of my fellow Voices. Tankwoman gathered up the financial bits and pieces that I'd been noticing yesterday and put them into her most recent post, Financial Crisis?, voicing the night sweats about the financial future that I'd just been having when she asks "Is that sound I'm hearing now the sound of the shit hitting the fan?" And Bruce posts my worst fantasy in today's sidebar quote from Joe Conason:"Even if George W. Bush is the most awful American president in modern times, as many historians believe, and even though he has brought the United States into unprecedented disrepute around the world, as opinion polls indicate, the bombastic tone of the candidates seeking to succeed him from his own party raises a disturbing possibility. If the next president is a Republican, this truly bad situation could become still worse. "If the next president is a Republican...." That was actually the thought that had me panting into my pillows at about two a.m. We think it's bad, we can't imagine it being any worse...until we imagine President Mitt Romney, or John McCain, etc. If this fantasy becomes a reality it will be a nightmare without a five am ending, no hope of ever getting out of bed and facing the relief of dawn. When I despair of the lineup of Democratic presidential hopefuls, I need to keep Conason's quote in mind. Technorati Tags: financial crisis, joe conason, republican nightmares | +Save/Share | | |
