Republicans debate

I watched about an hour of the Republicans' CNN "YouTube" debate on Wednesday evening. I think my favorite moment was when Mike Huckabee assured us that Jesus probably doesn't want us to rip our eyes out for His sake.

All the Republicans love the Iraq War, of course. Except for Ron Paul, who wants to put "America first", to quote the term he used as a nod to his Old Right isolationist hardcore supporters.

Benito Giuliani is still the greatest mayor in the history of the world. And did I mention he was the hero of 9/11?

The marvelous Maverick McCain did his "straight talk" number a couple of times. If you were hearing him address the subject for the first time, you might have been impressed at his opposition to torture. Mitt Romney could have called the Maverick on the fact that he was willing to accept Bush's signing statement declaration on McCain's own anti-torture measure, in which Bush effectively said that he had no intention of obeying that law any more than any other anti-torture laws. But Romney was too busy doing his smarmy, comma-dancing defense of the Drowning Torture, aka, "waterboarding".

That what the Christian theocratic movement has done to the Republican Party, with help from neocon militarists and just plain nasty characters like Cheney and Rummy. They've brought the Party to the point where the candidates are expected to show their skill at fundamentalist Biblical exegesis and to compete with each other in defending torture. Republicans, this is your Party on OxyContin.
