Kiss My Delegate CountSo I began writing this post last night, thinking that we were finally going to have a Democratic presidential nominee, and I woke up this morning glad that I hadn't finished and posted it. I would have been wrong, (which doesn't really bother me) if I had predicted last night that Barak Obama would lock down the nomination. I was looking forward to getting behind a candidate, and while I am a Clinton supporter and a donor, I am getting a little anxious about the outcome of this primary. What is clear to me today is that neither candidate will have enough delegates to clinch the nomination, and the super delegates will have to decide this at the convention.Barak Obama has more delegates, but Hillary Clinton has more super delegates. Neither one can get to the magic number of 2025. There is the question of the Florida and Michigan primaries, but the rules were established, and to try to change the rules in the middle of the race seems crazy. Each side will cry foul if the rules are changed, no matter the outcome, whether the super delegate count that Hillary has racked up will be the deciding factor, or if we throw out the magic number of 2025, and decide in favor of Barak because he has more regular delegates. In each scenario, there will be some pissed off members of the Democratic party, and hard feelings among the candidates and supporters of each. I guess the Republicans are laughing today at the indecision and flip flopping of the Democratic voters. To me, the indecision reflects the passion and diversity of our party, and the many important issues that face our country. And while the Republicans may be celebrating, and planning to use our diversity against us, they have given the Democrats an invaluable gift today. The endorsement of John McCain by President Bush this afternoon, the image of Bush passing on the torch of destruction to the newly crowned prince, is an image that Democrats will use to unite our divided party, no matter who wins the nomination. Liberals should be reminded today who the real enemy is. | +Save/Share | | |
