Easter Day for Christians represents a celebration of new beginnings. But the war goes on in Iraq, with no positive new beginnings yet in sight: Violence spikes in Iraq as 48 are killed by Alexandra ZavisLos Angeles Times Online:

At least 48 Iraqis were killed and dozens injured today in bomb blasts, mortar fire and other violence, a reminder of the fragility of recent security gains.

The U.S.-protected Green Zone also came under heavy mortar or rocket fire this morning. There were no immediate reports of casualties inside the fortified enclave, which houses the U.S. Embassy, government offices and military bases. But Iraqi police said a number of the projectiles missed their apparent target and caused some casualties in neighboring districts.

The Christian Science Monitor's Sam Dagher reports on the incident in Green Zone attack originated in Sadr City, say witnesses 03/24/08 edition (accessed 03/23/08):

A barrage of rockets hit the Green Zone – landing near the US Embassy – in Baghdad on Sunday morning.

The rockets appear to have been fired from the Shiite militia stronghold neighborhood of Sadr City in what observers see as further evidence that a cease-fire by the group loyal to cleric Moqtada al-Sadr may be unraveling.

Most of the rockets fell "really close" to the US Embassy that's located inside the heavily protected Green Zone, according to a diplomat who spoke on condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to speak to the media about the attack. (my emphasis)
