The God Squad
So much talk lately about "The Dream Team" - or "The Unity Ticket". Will Obama ask Hillary to the big dance? Would she prefer to sit this one out?
I'm not sure I care which way those questions get answered. I'm more concerned now about "The God Squad" - the cynical joining of McCain and Huckabee on the GOP ticket. What's so cynical about that pairing? Reverend Huckabee is a pure religion play - someone who can appeal to the same folks that McCain hoped to win over by courting the Reverend Hagee (the guy who just apologized to Catholics for calling their church a "whore").
McCain is not a particularly religious fellow, and not at all the darling of the religious right (especially after he denounced Pat Robertson and others of his ilk as "agents of intolerance" and "corrupting influences on religion and politics"). But that was then, Maverick has had his "Come to Jesus" moment, and suddenly Reverend Huckabee looks to be a good match.
Posted above - from December 2007, This Week with George Stephanopolous. A brief discussion that captures many of my own thoughts on this subject very well. The discussion then was primarily about Romney's failed attempt to rise above the fear / disdain for Mormonism among the same folks McCain is now trying to impress, but it also touched on the broader theme of how much America has changed since 1984, when Republicans chose to become the political wing of a religious group.
A McCain-Huckabee ticket could secure and extend the gains that GOP theocrats made in America these past 7-plus years. If you like that idea, you know for whom to vote.
